Stark Country:‘Nancy’ Cartoonist Guy Gilchrist Releases Charitable Holiday Single To Country Radio
By Phyllis Stark, Executive Editor, Country Music
Sharp-eyed readers of United Features’ syndicated “Nancy” comic strip will notice a recurring theme: country music. Country artists have been pictured, named, sung about, and emblazoned on t-shirts and hats worn by the Aunt Fritzi character. Writer and illustrator Guy Gilchrist also gave Aunt Fritzi her first known job since the strip was launched in 1922 starring the character as a flapper and wannabe actress. Gilchrist made her a reporter who writes about music.
The strip’s author since 1995, Gilchrist is not just a country music fan, he’s also a lifelong songwriter and musician. After years of making many trips to Nashville to co-write with other songwriters, he made the move to Music City from Connecticut in June of this year—with encouragement from country legend Bill Anderson and former WSM-AM air personality Keith Bilbrey—to pursue his songwriting more seriously.
Now, he’s released his first single to country radio, a holiday track called “Merry Christmas, Sluggo (San Quentin School For Boys),” heavily based on the iconic Johnny Cash song “Folsom Prison Blues.” Gilchrist is donating a significant chunk of his songwriting and record sale proceeds from the song to the Boys Town, a non-profit dedicated to the care of at-risk kids. The CD single also contains another Gilchrist holiday composition, “Christmas Light.”
Gilchrist hand signed and personalized copies of “Merry Christmas, Sluggo” and sent them out to 800 country stations. With no staff working it, Gilchrist says he is relying on “friends and family” to call stations on the single’s behalf.
In the song, the Sluggo character gets into some trouble, punching another kid in math class “just to watch him cry.” Gilchrist says the story line reminds him of his 11-year-old self, who was getting into fights at school and heading down a destructive path. It was the kind attention of a country radio DJ who lived in his neighborhood that sent Gilchrist in another direction.
“God puts angels in your life, whether you know it or not,” Gilchrist says. In his case, it was WEXT West Hartford, Conn., morning man Dick Shuey, who started giving him records and talking to him about music. “One day he gave me a whole album, Johnny Cash’s ‘Live At San Quentin’,” an album Gilchrist says “went into my soul.” Just a few years later, he was working for an animator, playing in a rockabilly band, and had found a direction for his life.
Gilchrist says he identifies with country artists who have close ties to their fans, as he does with “Nancy” readers. “The only reason I’m anybody at all is because people like reading what I do,” he says. He also notes an interesting parallel between illustrating a comic and writing songs. “When you’re creating [either one], it’s a very private thing,” he says. “But then, unlike other people’s work, it ends up going out to 70 million fans.”
As a child, and a fan of both music and illustration, Gilchrist says, “I saw absolutely no difference between Hank Williams, Chuck Berry and Dr. Seuss. They were all great at telling stories.”
In “Nancy,” Gilchrist first tested the waters of including references to music artists by drawing a velvet Elvis painting on a wall. “No one noticed,” he reports. So after seeing the country band Ricochet play at a club in Connecticut in the mid-’90s, he drew the band’s logo on Fritzi’s ball cap, making them the first country act to appear in the strip. He was deluged with mail about it, and a tradition was started. Since then, he says, hundreds of artists have been name-checked in the strip including some, like Charlie Daniels, who have appeared multiple times.
With an estimated 70 million readers worldwide, it’s not surprising to know that music publicists soon began lobbying for mentions of their acts. But Gilchrist says the mention “has to feel right for the feature” and fit in naturally. Gilchrist also sometimes mentions charitable causes he believes in.
“Nancy” runs in approximately 360 U.S. newspapers, as well as a variety of Web sites. The strip is also seen in papers in 80 other countries. Prior to taking over “Nancy,” Gilchrist drew the “Jim Henson’s Muppets” strip and was one of the creators of “Muppets Babies.” He has also authored 48 children’s books.

Country Media)Country songwriter-artist and cartoonist extrodinaire Guy Gilchrist will host his self-dubbed “Guy Gilchrist’s Christmas Spectacular Show” on Thursday, Dec. 17, at the Sun Beach Club,170 N. Water Ave., in Gallatin.
Beginning at 8:30 p.m.-midnight, Gilchrist and his full band--The Sluggo Smith Christmas Orchestra, under the direction of guitarist Andy Reiss--will get the Christmas-themed party started, with a bit of help from special musical guests, including traditional-country hitmaker Tommy Cash, who will perform a trio of songs during the festivities.
Currently touring in support of his 15-song Fade To Black CD, Cash reportedly will treat eventgoers to his former No. 1, the classic "Six White Horses," as well as a holiday tune, "That Christmas Feeling," that was penned by Tommy and recorded by his late brother, music icon Johnny Cash.
Proceeds from the Thursday evening show, which is co-sponsored by Strum Magazine, will benefit the Boys Town charity, an organization near and dear to Gilchrist's heart. In fact, the Nancy comic-strip illustrator is donating part of the proceeds from sales of his latest two yuletide tunes, "Merry Christmas, Sluggo (San Quentin School for Boys)” and “Christmas Light,” as well as the songwriting royalties to the children's charity.

Are you kidding? For Tommy to come out and be a guest with such a busy schedule, to give to Boys Town like this? I'm so honored! But he's Tommy Cash. He and his family are givers. I am not surprised--just thankful for such a gift.”
In addition to the Arkansas-born Cash, the Christmas concert also will feature the Nancy Family Singers, who are composed of Mackenzie Morgan, Joe Rucker and Amanda Cornett.
Each of the Nancy singers will be highlighted during the Dec. 17 event with their own solo performances of Christmas songs. Plus, Elvis fans will be in for a treat when Elvis impersonator Doug Wilson jumps in the mix. Says Guy: “Doug puts on an incredible Elvis show! He loves to help out with kids. We work together each year at Charlie Daniel's Angelus benefit.”
Proceeds from sales of Guy's new EP will
benefit the Boys Town charity. In addition to a healthy mix of Christmas favorites, Gilchrist will perform his two newest holiday tracks, with some 50-plus country radio outlets now spinning both songs--never mind that "Merry Christmas, Sluggo" is currently offering fans the opportunity to download a free mp3 of “Merry Christmas, Sluggo” directly from its Web site through Dec. 31.
So, with so much holiday fun and great music on tap, there's no better place to be come Thursday evening than at Gilchrist benefit show for Boys Town! And for those who arrive by 7:30 p.m., world-class cartoonist Gilchrist will be creating drawings on request, with proceeds from their sale going to Boys Town, too. (Come on, how unique is that for a Christmas present for a loved one?)

Houston Examiner: Guy Gilchrist-“Merry Christmas, Sluggo” Christmas and “Christmas Light" the perfect Christmas gift
December 21, 3:12 PMHouston Country Music ExaminerSherry Jane Cooke
Guy Gilchrist's “Merry Christmas, Sluggo” Christmas and “Christmas Light”- the absolute funniest and inspiring CD singles for Christmas, and most of the proceeds are donated to Boys Town!
http://www.guygilchristmusic.com/fr_songs.cfm
Guy Gilchrist seems to have talents that never end and cannot be compared to any music star that I’ve yet to find! Guy’s talents include singer, songwriter, cartoonist, poet, outlaw country rock with soul, heart and plenty of laughter, philanthropist and a life time of entertaining the world, embodies the true meaning of Christmas, with the self release of “Merry Christmas, Sluggo” single and its bonus track, “Christmas Light” and most of the proceeds are donated to Boys Town!
“Philanthropist” is something Guy should take as one of the biggest and well-deserved award title in life…. BMI Publishing revenue generated by these two songs will benefit Boys Town and 1/2 of the royalties on the "Sluggo" song will go to House of Cash....because Johnny was such a huge part of the song, and Guy's life. And Guy Gilcrest’s will be an additional article. His life is incredibly full of love, talent and success, so rather than take five pages to give you his life story, it will be condensed in this article and another on Guy’s life will come soon in this column!

Guy’s website quotes “Boys’ Town http://www.boystown.org/Pages/default3.aspx is a beacon of hope for America’s children and families through its life-changing youth and health care programs across the United States. Every child who arrives at Boys Town has a story to tell. A story of neglect and abuse... of disappointments and devastation. You make it possible for us to provide a home, and more importantly, healing. Thank you for being a part of a bright future for our children.” Please help by playing this record, and publicizing this cause!
Coincidentally and inspiring, this Examiner’s own family has been donating to the 90 year old organization, Boys’ Town since my great grandfather’s time and we plan to continue the tradition on to our children and theirs!
”Merry Christmas, Sluggo” (San Quentin School for Boys), is one of the most hilarious Christmas songs ever. Guy Gilchrist shows his incredible genius in his versatile range of his music and fantastic sense of humor! The song is sung to the tune of “Folsom Prison Blues” through the mind of a kid who “slapped a kid in math class just to watch him cry!”…. so now he’s in “the San Quentin School for Boys!” What? And that darn “lunch lady”…I’ve known lunch ladies like that too!So now in detention (I’m still laughing!), the poor kid sobs his promise to repent, waiting and begging for that “Man in Red and White”, and there’s mention of looking for that “reindeers in the sky”…sort of like “Ghost riders” with a little slide into that tune and back to “Folsom Prison Blues,”….Sluggo’s friend “Nancy” is getting a Barbie, and the laughs just keep coming! I’ll not reveal the end; that would ruin it for you!
It’s got to be the funniest Christmas song today. At $.79 for the song, you can’t resist the offer and laughter brought on by Guy’s songwriting brilliance in the “Merry Christmas, Sluggo” (San Quentin School For Boys) and his wonderfully “Johnny Cash” styled performance! And for the cause of Boys Town”, it’s priceless!
The second single, “Christmas Light,” shows the incredible versatility and beauty of Guy Gilchrist’s music. The violins swoop lightly through in the background with the blessings of angels. The lyrics are the most powerful reminder for us to be blessed with the true meaning of Christmas and will definitely be played over and over for my extensively large family audience! I know that the song was meant for each and every one of us, in whatever situation, hoping for the blessing of that bright Christmas star’s light.
But, in researching, interviewing and now knowing Guy, (I’ll report in my upcoming interview with this genuine angel with a beard and cowboy hat and huge heart and talent.) I also know that it was written and performed so lovingly for all of us, those who can’t be here, and those in far, war-torn lands. The song should be a standard in all homes and it is guaranteed to hold and love you. And you’ll wonder, as I did, why those tears may fall. Guy seems to bring about that feeling with “Christmas Light” that we are like those Wise Men who bask in the light of God’s blessing and promise for us in the “Light” at Christmas and everyday of our own journey in life. The song will hold you, rock you softly and feed that beauty we all crave in this world, Christmas or all our lives. God bless you for this one, Guy Gilchrist!
Guy Gilchrist is a true genius and multi-talented star of light himself, giving us a reason to burst out in genuine, loud laughter and the most wonderful soul searching beauty – what awesome versatility in this man of faith and happiness. Who else could do all that, except for maybe…Santa? ... or a higher power? I was seeing through the music to a man, Guy Gilchrist, who has a special love for everyone, and has been blessed with superhuman talents in songwriting, singing, humor and love for his fellow man and philanthropic drive to help Boys Town.
As for his muses, he thanks them in his website,” I thank my syndicate, United Feature Syndicate, for donating all their character and name royalties to this cause, Raney Recording Studio for donating their time, materials and talents, Andy Reiss, Mandy Barnett, Eddie Kilgallon, Randy Plude, and Brandon Giles for their brilliant talents, Bernard Porter and Preshias for their expert advice and direction, my agent, Bruce Butterfield, Kathleen Wayner, George Sellas, and our volunteers for getting out the word...the late Father Flanagan for his love of humanity that is Boys Town...Johnny Cash...and all my Sun Records heroes and friends...and to the Queen of Christmas....Brenda Lee.” I agree, Brenda Lee is my favorite for queen, and she’s mentioned in Sluggo’s Christmas wishes!
