Guy & Randy: Class Of 1975: Songs Written with Cold Miller Beer, A Carton of Winstons, & A Piano
$1.96
These are the earliest recordings of songs I wrote with my High School friend, amazing Pianist Randall Jon Plude. Randy and I started writing together as soon as we met. I was the School Poet, and he was the best Piano Player at Avon High. Matt Townsend and Carol Hahn sang the lead vocals on these, since Randy and I were both too scared to sing anything but background...and with the School Choir. You'll hear Randy on Piano... he is classically trained, and it comes through...even this far back. It's kind of cool to remember these were pretty much done in one take. Back then, we were either still in High School, or just out...you got in and out as quick as you could from the studio, because time was money...and nobody we knew had any of that. These were recorded either at Randy's house, or at Nickel Records over on Washington St. in Hartford Connecticut. Jack, the owner, always was kind to us. These songs have all been copyrighted since at least 1978, 79, and 80. Randy and I both joined BMI...even had a song or two cut and played on the radio and in the clubs back then. Thanks to my good friend Randy for rescuing these from tape, and digitizing them. I've asked Randy for some words about those times, and you'll read them after my "introduction". Here's to Friends Forever, Young Hearts, Young Dreams....and an old Pool Table up over the old barn-garage.....and now...Mr. Plude...if you will....
"Guy Gilchrist and Randy Plude, and their musical adventures started back in 1974 when juniors in high school.
They spent hours on end listening to the likes of Jackson Browne, Linda Rondstadt, the Eagles and Dan Fogelberg and wrote their first song together sitting an an old upright piano at the tender age of 16.
They were the only ones in high school history across the nation given an 'A' for never showing up in English LIt classes while they wrote and scored the script, music and lyrics for a comedy musical film remake of the "Iliad and The Odyssey in 1975 which was played countless times (at least twice) at Avon High School. They also teamed up to be co-emcees for the 1975 Avon High School Variety Show and won great reviews (mostly for getting off the stage at the end of the show!).
They wrote more songs than they can remember, some of which were published by independent record labels and a Nashville publishing house. Guy and Randy's efforts were also recognized by the American Song Festival for numerous songs.
Guy and Randy also collaborated on music for Guys "Tiny Dinos" tv shows and commercial jingles, and "Little Ages" cartoons and was often heard on various N.Y. Radio and television networks.
They have been lifelong friends (with their periods of ups and downs as do we all) for the past 35 years."

How A Song Happens For Guy...
This is my studio, where I draw, write, and record my rough demos.
I am surrounded in this place by stuff that just makes me comfortable. That guitar, my old 54 Harmony Broadway Archtop, is still the guitar that feels the best to play. I have books, albums, toys, all kinds of stuff. oh...and all the professional equipment I need to get any project done.
The walls have autographed Albums of Friends and Heroes. Tony Orlando...an angel to so many, Lynn Anderson, Country Class, The Marshall Tucker Band, Joe South, Chris Hillman, and Gary Lewis and The Playboys...I learned to write songs listening to the radio....Oh...and Ann Margret...Elvis wasn't wrong. One of the most giving, kindest, my friend...and yeah...we know about the wrapping paper God put this gift to the world in.
I just reached in my brown leather bag I take with me...and this is what came out...Elvis on Sun with Scotty, and Bill....my Composition Book....I'm listening, hearing, writing, all the time everywhere.
I have this "Elvis Shrine" that keeps getting added to. I have the Beatles backing him up. I know....my studio is like a 14 year old's room...just messier.
Toys.
In the morning, especially after I've been doing a gig the night before, I just throw my bag, and everything else right on top of my big light table where I draw. I got up this morning at about five. I had a song to write down...it had been playing in my dreams....I got to my composition book and started scribbling whatever I can remember....
I'll scribble anywhere, anytime. Gags for the comic, words for a poem, a marketing idea...anything....and songs. Always songs. Then, I pull out these napkins, atm slips, etc and start feeding them into my composition books. I can't write on a computer.
My 54 harmony Broadway. She's been with me through everything. I swear...the guitar writes some of the songs by herself.
After I get some stuff down...I get the guitar out and just strum chords, a beat, anything....usually just a blues riff....to see how the words are setting into a beat. Then, I go to my computer and sing and play guitar on a quick scratch tape mp3 so I don't lose the idea. I'll go back and work on these songs many, many times sometimes to get it right before I play it for anyone outside the house.
After I have an idea of how I want the song to go, and an idea of the sound I'm looking for, I'll usually go cut a demo with musician friends and producers in Nashville.
We'll start with what we call a Scratch track. That's where I just basically sing the song and play the song live into the mics, so we have something to start building from. None of the Scratch track will make it to the final master recording.
Sometimes I'll then record a rhythm guitar track.
Here's Dave Tanner putting down a Bass Track. That's an old Stand Up. This song needs to have strictly old, beautiful instruments in it.
Here's Dave playing around with some electric rhythm licks over the acoustic ones. We'll do this over and over sometimes...and some other times, like today...we nailed it one shot! That's a 57 Gibson that boy's got there!
Going back in and changing some words, phrasing....
Harmony vocals too....anything...
I think on this day, we may have even cut the vocals and the scratch guitar for a couple of other things to keep the kettle on simmer....
Eddie Kilgallon. An awesome producer, arranger, piano player for Montgomery Gentry...and my friend. We've cut so many songs together.
This is Jimmy Matajek. Jim plays guitar for Montgomery Gentry. This shot was from when we cut "Victoria's Secret" and "Jim Beam Me Up, Scotty". Jim played all the guitars on those songs. Tracking over many times.
Jimmy Matajek and Guy after a session.
Yeah.....before you hear a song from me on the stage...it goes through a lot. I always practice it until I feel it's going to sound like I want it to...and be real.
I get to sometimes work with legends like SongWriter Hall Of Famer Jerry Foster.
One of the first folks in Nashville to ask me to write songs with him was the immortal Billy Walker. An angel.
I get much inspiration from images. I saw this image of a star in the sky becoming the tear of an angel....
A Song that started out as a poem.........
Another song that also was an illustrated poem.
And another song as an illustrated poem too.
This poem was in my Night Lights II book for years, until I finished it as a song.
This song also started as an image....seeing all the stars in the sky connecting into this woman....
A song that was an illustrated poem too.
This poem was in my Night Lights II book for years, until I finished it as a song.

The Christmas Sessions
Christmas is for kids...like all of us.
Guy got some extremely wise council on recording and producing...from Producer/Guitar King Scotty Moore...
Guy is always writing. A guitar and scraps of paper are everywhere...all the time.
These two songs...the basic premises, came to Guy at different times. The first song, Christmas Light, was first written as a Christmas FairyFlights Poem for last year's, 2008, Christmas edition for newspapers. The second, San Quentin School for Boys, came to Guy as an idea for a "brand new Christmas Rock and Roll Song from 1958". He usually gets the chords down...and all the lyric he can create before they flutter off again.
He keeps notes in those Composition Books just like he has all his life. All Guy's Books, his comic strips, all his Songs...everything...all written in scribbles and longhand.
Guy will go into a studio and lay down rough vocals and guitar to begin...
Guy reworks the vocals, rewrites the lyrics...as the song takes shape.
Andy Reiss,of The Time Jumpers, two time Grammy nominee, and the man who played guitar on Grammy winners for Reba McIntyre, played all the instruments besides piano on "San Quentin", and Guy and Andy were guilty co-conspirators on everything else!
Andy Reiss,of The Time Jumpers, two time Grammy nominee, and the man who played guitar on Grammy winners for Reba McIntyre, played all the instruments besides piano on "San Quentin", and Guy and Andy were guilty co-conspirators on everything else!
Mandy Barnett: Mandy, of the hit musical, "Always, Patsy Cline" lended her amazing, varied vocal talents to "San Quentin School For Boys(Merry Christmas, Sluggo)"
Eddie Kilgallon, of Montgomery Gentry, and Ricochet.. conducted the orchestra and choral group for "Christmas Light".
Here's Fluffy, Andy's dog...inspiring Guy and her Master to play on.
Boogie Woogie King Brandon Giles was brought in to add authentic 1958 Rocking, Pumping Piano to the San Quentin Record.
Fluffy....oh, yeah. Rock on.
This has nothing to do with the record, and everything to do with Christmas. Guy with his Granddaughter, Amber, and Cassidy, Kate's Granddaughter. Christmas...for children.
